Muvel: the best writing tool for authors

So the real reason my serial never made it past 30 episodes was the tool!

A complete workspace for authors

Muvel is an editor optimized for novel writing.
Projects are made up of episodes, wiki pages, canvases, and memos, letting you systematically manage everything from worldbuilding and manuscripts to ideas and plans.

Episodes

A format for managing your novel manuscript by episode or chapter. The episode editor provides tools that make writing easier, with a UI similar to web novel platforms.

Wiki

A format for managing story settings such as worldbuilding, characters, events, and plot development. The wiki editor provides a familiar wiki UI and utilities such as table-of-contents management.

Memos

A format for quick notes that are not quite manuscript or formal setting: loose ideas, things to check while writing, and anything that needs a simple place to live.

Wherever you write, on any device cross-platform

Muvel works consistently on PCs, phones, and tablets.
You can use it directly on the web without installing,

Your manuscript is yours, with real data ownership

No matter what happens to the service, your manuscript should always remain yours.

Muvel does not want to grow by trapping writers inside its service.
Even when that choice works against our own interests,
we value data ownership and freedom of choice over lock-in.

That is why Muvel lets you begin without an account, save to your own device,
and take your entire manuscript with you whenever you need.

Keep writing without an account

Software built around an account may become impossible to launch when its service ends. Muvel's desktop app lets you create a local project and write without signing up or logging in.

Keep it only on your device

If you do not want to entrust your manuscript to a cloud server, keep it on your own device from start to finish. Local projects work offline without uploading your manuscript.

Export everything anytime

Export your entire work as a backup whenever you want. You can also move a cloud project into Muvel's local project format and choose where it is kept.

Readable beyond Muvel

Local projects use an open, unencrypted JSON-based format. You can open the files and inspect your manuscript and data structure without going through the Muvel app.

An automatic exit route: Auto-Plotter

Turn on Auto-Plotter to organize episodes and wiki documents in your chosen format and folder automatically. If Muvel has a problem, your latest manuscript can move to another tool.

Updates are your choice too

Has an update ever disrupted a familiar writing setup? Muvel lets you choose whether to update, and you can download an earlier version again when you need it.

Cloud projects, backed up locally

When you work on a cloud project in the desktop app, episodes and wiki documents are also backed up in local-project format. You get convenient sync and a backup on your own device.

Freely customizable writing environment

Keep distractions out of your workspace.
From background color, fonts, and line spacing to split workspaces and a widget system that lets you place only the tools you want, Muvel helps you build your own writing environment.

Flexible settings

Fonts, background color, line spacing, text-count rules, typewriter scroll, and most other workspace details can be customized in settings.

Workspace editor

An advanced editor for authors who like to write with multiple pieces of information open at once. Split the screen, place episodes, wiki pages, memo boards, and more wherever you want, then resize them freely.

Automatic versioning

Muvel automatically saves the current version of your novel every 10 minutes, so you have a fallback if something was changed by mistake.

Muvel runs on your support

In April 2025,
A small tool began with neither capital nor investment, sustained by support given without expecting anything in return.
Those contributions came together, one by one, to make Muvel what it is today.

Muvel has now grown into a formal business,
but we still believe it should be a tool made for writing, not a tool made for selling.
We will always remember that it was not outside investment or large amounts of capital, but your support that carried Muvel this far.

What began as a bootstrapped project focused on surviving one day at a time is now learning to stand on its own two feet.

Our business's goal is now to earn back at least minimum wage for the work our team puts in!
Please cheer us on as we pursue this grand ambition!(A subscription would be lovely too...)

We hope Muvel will still be your little notebook ten years from now—and forever!
